Stalbridge Christmas 2003 !

20/11/2021

Picture
18 years ago The Lime Tree on the Ring in Stalbridge was lit for the very first time. It was the 9th November 2003 and a small team of brave souls set about the task of adding up to 4000 lights to the Lime tree on The Ring, in Stalbridge. An autumnal Sunday morning, dull and overcast - but by 8am the team had gathered... they carried on until nightfall - and still hadn't quite finished - that gives an idea of the scale of the job in hand! "As you may know, Stalbridge has been raising funds throughout 2003 to enable the purchase of the lights for the tree on The Ring. Organiser Julian Else (pictured below in red!) has been overwhelmed by the level of local support... including those mad enough to offer their services in climbing trees on cold November days." It's all part of Stalbridge christmas celebrations which are proving to be better and better as each year passes. With no fear of heights, the team of volunteers are pictured below, setting up to light the Lime tree on The Ring at Stalbridge for the first time, this Christmas.

LIGHTING UP STALBRIDGE 2003
As you will know we have been raising funds this year so that 4,000 white lights can be placed on the large Lime Tree at the Ring and on Monday 1st December 2003 the lights on the tree were switched on. This was a very special event as the tree has never been lit before and it is thanks to everyone who bought a bulb and raised money in many other ways that it has become a reality.
At 6.30pm The Revd. William Ridding held a short service of celebration on the Ring. The winners of the Primary School Christmas Card competition were then invited to switch on the lights. Seasonal music was played, carols sung and mulled wine was served under the tree by Blackmore Vale Lions. Thank you to everyone who came along to join in and make this a very memorable occasion for the people of Stalbridge.
Following the success of the last two years, Stalbridge held another Late Night Shopping Evening in the High Street. Many people came along and joined the High Street Traders in their shops to enjoy a glass of wine or a festive bite, or just to enjoy the Christmas music that filled the High Street from one end to the other.
Visitors had the opportunity to buy a present or two, or just to browse, and of course Father Christmas stopped by on his sleigh, thanks to the Blackmore Vale Lions. Many of the organisations in Stalbridge ran stalls to raise money for their funds.
The top end of Station Road was closed to traffic during the Late Night Shopping evening and many stalls were set up on both sides of the street, and throughout the evening there was Bell Ringing, Carol Singing and music from the Wessex Highlanders.

A very special night for Stalbridge !

We're nearly there Stalbridge!

The Fundraising Campaign to Light up Stalbridge This Christmas has been a great success, but we need just a few more people to donate in order to achieve our target. If you are able to do online banking you can make a donation by visiting our crowdfunder page.  Alternatively you can take your cash or cheque donation to The Stalbridge Community Library in The Hub at Station Road during their opening hours:- The library is open from 2.00 pm to 5.00pm on Tuesdays, 12 noon to 2.30pm on Wednesdays, 3.00 pm to 6.00pm on Thursdays and 9.30 am to 12.30 pm on Saturdays. There is a Stalbright Donation Box at the Library ready to accept your donation. Every year since 2003 the splendid Lime tree on The Ring at Stalbridge has been lit up for the Christmas season with 4000 lights, paid for by the Stalbright Group. We have not been able to fundraise this past year and a half and so we would really appreciate your help in maintaining this long tradition of lighting the Lime tree. We are hoping to reach a target of £1000 to pay for the maintenance of the lights, the repairs and replacements and the contractors and machinery needed. We have so far raised £930 of our £1000 target but need those last few donations to reach it. Please help us if you can, from as little as £1.
Thank you from the Stalbright team

Picture
The Ridgeway Singers and Band were created as part of a 2013 Artsreach project - ‘Rooting Round the Ridgeway’. Every Christmas since, the group have performed West Gallery Carol concerts in churches and village halls across Dorset. With their roots in the South Dorset Ridgeway and inspired by the rich sources of locally collected folk songs and West Gallery carols, The Ridgeway Singers & Band led by Tim Laycock and Phil Humphries have once again tuned their fiddles and voices to present a joyous celebration of Christmas past and present for Artsreach this winter.
Traditionally sung by village choirs in English country churches from the 18th century onwards, West Gallery music’s demise was brought about by changes in musical fashion and the innovations of the organ and harmonium. The accompanying musicians, usually performing from a gallery at the west end of the church, who played the fiddle, the cello and the serpent might have become no more than a footnote in history: but thanks to Thomas Hardy and his first novel, Under the Greenwood Tree, the carols that his grandfather and father played ‘Going the Rounds’, and the local traditional songs and dance tunes that they played so vigorously, have not only survived, but have been kept alive in grand style! The result is a joyful and toe-tapping musical celebration of the midwinter season.
