2p or not 2p, that is the question...

30/10/2017

Picture
Our Super Stalbridge Supermarket Dike & Son of Stalbridge has taken the decision to start charging for plastic carrier bags. Unlike other "supermarkets" all the money accrued from this will go to charity. We are trying to promote this on Stalbridge Info so no-one is caught short, but if you are, and you get charged for your bags please don't get grumpy. Just remember that you are contributing to charity until you can remember to bring your own bags, or buy one of their lovely jute bags to carry home your lovely purchases from this highly respected independent store. As a spokesperson for Dikes said..."from tomorrow (Monday 30th October) please note that we will be charging 2p for our plastic carrier bags. The money will go to our Charity Fund, Making A Difference Locally. We hope this will help more carrier bags to be reused and recycled, better for the planet!" So it's up to you...2p or not 2p, that is the question!
Dikes have a long history of innovation and progress since their inception in 1851...
"The Dike family have played a large part in the community since 1851 when they were grocers, but more predominantly bakers back then. In 1909 three cottages in Ring Street, Stalbridge, were purchased by William James Dike, (William Dike's grandfather) and were demolished and rebuilt as a grocery shop and a bake house. It was these premises that served the family proudly for just short of 100 years, witnessing numerous extensions and changes over that period.

Reign on Our Parade

29/10/2017

Picture
We would like as many children and adults as possible to make a lantern and join the Stalbridge Lantern Parade on Friday 1st December, meeting in Stalbridge Close at 5.30pm and processing to The Ring at Stalbridge for the Light Up Stalbridge Celebrations. There are 2 ways to do this...You can make your own Lantern at home, or you can come to one of our FREE Stalbright Lantern Workshops in the Scout Hall, Please note this year we will be asking you to provide your own lights / torches to be fitted into your lanterns. The sessions take place on Sat 18th & Sat 25th November . The Morning sessions run from 10am-12 noon and the Afternoon sessions from 2-4pm.
Its not just for the kids! Artistic adults and those who just think they are a most welcome!
Places are limited to 30 makers per session so booking is essential. You can register to take part in the parade with the lantern you have made at home or book your place at one of the lantern making sessions...just click on the button below to register for the parade or the workshops.
We need everyone to register for 2 reasons... Firstly, so we know how many people are joining the parade, and secondly for Elf and Safety reasons. (if you book a place at one of the making sessions we will automatically register you for the parade) Please note that only lanterns with battery powered lighting can be used at the parade (also for elf and safety reasons!)

How Bazaar!

27/10/2017

Picture
They've left it a bit late to advertise it properly but the Stalbridge Friday Morning Coffee Group are having a bazaar tomorrow (Saturday 28th) in Stalbridge Hall from 2pm to 4pm. Lots of stalls, tombola, raffle, cake stall, teas and lots more. 50p entry.

So who are the "Coffee Groupies"?

The group was formed in 1971 by the late Liz Basset with the intention of mixing the “natives” of Stalbridge with the “foreigners” that had moved into the then NEW estate of Westacres. It seems to have worked because 44 years later and some years after the death of Liz we are getting stronger.
New faces are always welcome.

We meet for coffee each Friday Morning, in the HALL It is a non-denominational group, and you do not have to be a member in fact we do not have a membership. The idea is that any one can drop in for Coffee or tea & Biscuits and a natter.
Age is no barrier and we do have a number men who congregate on one table, and leave us women to talk amongst ourselves. All very civilised.
Any profit that is made during the year both from our bazaars, cream teas, BBQs and monthly raffles etc. Goes to local charities & deserving causes

YuleFest Update

Picture
Stalbridge YuleFest have sold over 100 tickets to their Christmas Extravaganza. It looks like it's going to be a special evening for Stalbridge on Friday December 8th. As the YuleFest website explains: "There's plenty to do in Dorset over the summer but relatively little over the winter. We've created an event that appeals to the whole family, young and old, with music, good food and drink, children's entertainment and festive shopping opportunities. All are located undercover in a decorated and fairy-lit village of marquees and tipis surrounded by the sights, smells and sounds of Christmas.
For adults there's live music from a variety of bands plus an Oktoberfest style bar offering a variety of quality German pilsners. For children there's a dedicated marquee with disco, bouncy castle, skittle alley and face painting. Stone-baked pizzas, authentic German sausages, mulled wine and warm mince pies will be on offer and a variety of stall holders will be selling Christmas trees, wreaths, gifts, food and drink.
There are a limited number of tickets due to site and licensing restrictions so don't leave it until the day, book your tickets online and we look forward to seeing you there!"

A family ticket is £25 and under 5s are free. All profit from the event will be split between the primary school in Stalbridge and a children's cancer charity - so your ticket money goes a long way. And just in case you are thinking "Isn't it going to be a wash out if it rains?" The organisers have arranged 15,000 square feet of covered, HEATED marquees and tipis for the event and there will be ground protection mats between the marquees.
So book the date in your diary, then buy your tickets, either from Candys Newsagent in Stalbridge or from the YuleFest website, where you can find out more info on the event itself.

Picture
Spectra Musica is delighted to be appearing at the Church of St. Mary the Virgin in Gillingham on Saturday 25th November at 7.30 pm. The concert, ‘Autumn Leaves’  will be the group’s first performance at the church under the direction of the experienced, internationally known musician Peter Leech, who brings such energy and enthusiasm to Spectra Musica.
The programme will include two works by Mozart – the Ave Verum Corpus and less well known Misericordias Domini which was written in less than a week for High Mass in Munich in 1775.  Also included is Jeremiah Clarke’s anthem ‘Praise the Lord’ which was performed for the coronation of Queen Anne in April 1702.  Many more composers will feature and it is hoped that some of the lighter pieces will bring a smile to your face.
Concert pianist Anita D’Attellis will be accompanying the group and will feature throughout the evening.
Tickets are £12 from 01963 350160, on the door or at tickets@spectramusica.co.uk

Shed Those Pounds, in just a few days!

12/10/2017

Picture
The Round Pound is disappearing ! From 15 October, shops can refuse the old version of the £1 coin. Andrew Jones, the Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury says "The clock is ticking. We are urging the public to spend, bank or donate their old pound coins before they cease to be legal tender".
However, most banks and Post Office counters will continue to accept them from customers although they have no obligation to do so.
If you are shopping and get an old £1 coin in your change before the deadline of midnight on Sunday, you can politely ask the store to change it for a new one, but strangely enough they don’t have to as it’s still legal tender! After the 15th October deadline the shops won't be allowed to give you an old coin as change so you can refuse to take it if they accidentally do.
Many self-service machines at shops, and ticket vending machines have already stopped taking the old £1 coin, as the machines have been changed to accommodate the new one.
There are also many charity collection boxes that will have old pound coins in them, so if you are responsible for emptying them you need to be quick!
