The Gugg at Stalbridge and St. Mary's Church in Stalbridge are teaming up to bring you a Grand Marmalade sale,  which will take place at the Gugg in Stalbridge on Saturday 23rd April 2022. This annual event in support of The Church of St. Mary in Stalbridge is a celebration of Homemade marmalades. There's lots of time for you to make some before the event and bring your donation to the Gugg during setting up time on the day from 9am to 10. The sale runs from 10am to 12noon and includes Cakes, A raffle, Hot Drinks and biscuits. Entry fee is £1 (includes a tea or coffee).
FUN FACTS:-
  • The word 'marmalade' comes from 'marmelo', which is Portuguese for 'quince'. The first marmalade consumed in Britain was a thick quince and rosewater paste, and was supposed to be eaten just after your meal to help with digestion.
  • Most European countries use "marmalade" as a generic term for jams of all flavours, simply adding the name of the fruit to the description. In Italy, for example, jam made from oranges is called 'marmellata di arancia'.
  • The earliest known British recipe for marmalade made from Seville oranges is "marmelet of oranges" in a recipe book written by Eliza Cholmondeley about 1677. But marmalade was not produced on a commercial scale until the beginning of the 18th century, when an offshore storm forced a Spanish ship packed with Seville oranges seek shelter in Dundee harbour. James Keiller, a local grocer at the time, purchased the entire cargo at a very keen price, only to discover that these oranges were not sweet but sour and he couldn't sell them to anyone. His mother, Janet, came up with the idea of replacing the quinces she usually used to make marmalade with these oranges. She sold it in the family grocers shop and it proved so popular that she began to make it year in year out. Within 20 years the demand for orange marmalade in Scotland was so great that the world's first marmalade factory was opened in Dundee in 1797.

Stalbridge Hall News

14/2/2022

Picture
After a 15-month closure in 2020/21, Stalbridge Hall was slow to recover. Although we were free to open the doors in June of 2021 some of our regular groups did not want to return until September and then the uncertainty of winter meant we were continuously watching the changing restrictions. Unfortunately, one or two groups did not survive.
However, with life returning to somewhere near normal the hall is as busy as ever.
17 groups use the hall on a regular basis, with ages ranging between a few months old to 93 (a sharp Boules player). The hall is open for 63 hours a week, the kettle is boiled, lights and heating are switched on and off, countless times and on average chairs and tables are put out five times a week. Phew, Busy place.
There are 15 committee members that keep the hall running and one dedicated caretaker.
In the last six months Stalbridge hall has hosted some great events outside of weekly activities, from outdoor theatre to 16th Century Dorset Carols, plus music from Jazz to Ska.
This year brings all kinds of events, we are hopeful the regular Bingo will be reinstated from March onward, plus Car Boot, live Theatre, Music, including Opera later in the year, and this year we will be celebrating the Queens Platinum Jubilee in June.
We currently need a Treasurer and Secretary, the existing ones have been hoping to retire for the past couple of years now, but with the uncertainty of Covid have been persuaded to stay on. They now feel it is safe to hand over the reins. We are always grateful for volunteers and help at events or support of any kind.
To keep up to date with news, activities, events, plus how to hire the hall and how/who to contact for the various groups, please check out Stalbridge Hall’s shiny new website.

Stalbridge Cancer and Recovery Support

13/2/2022

Tracy White founded SCARS in 2014 having survived cancer herself and found that beyond the treatment and final hospital visits sufferers were often left feeling anxious and needing someone to talk to about their ongoing worries and problems.  Since then the SCARS has been meeting monthly in Stalbridge and visitors are offered a friendly, confidential and comfortable environment to take ‘time out’ and relax over a cuppa (and of course cake or biscuits!). SCARS not only welcomes current cancer patients or those who have recovered from cancer but also their family and friends who may find they also need support to come to terms with the life-changing effects of a cancer diagnosis on their loved ones and themselves.
SCARS is a self-funding, peer support Group who generate income through fundraising events throughout the year as well as being very fortunate to get some financial donations from other sources.  All income generated by fundraising or donated to SCARS are fully accounted for by our Treasurer and a yearly audit is undertaken at the end of our financial year on the 31st August.  Whilst SCARS are not a Charity we hold a yearly AGM in September to discuss the past year and how we feel we can improve on the services we offer and this is an excellent opportunity for all visitors to discuss matters they feel are important to them.  The funds as well as being used to run SCARS including Public Liability Insurance, Marketing etc can also allow for a small financial grant should anyone have a need to help cover travel for treatment or to aid them to attend for holistic/mindfulness treatments whilst undergoing their main cancer treatment which can be a huge benefit when treatment feels never ending.

Of course 2021 has been a very difficult year for everyone and SCARS is no exception but we feel immensely fortunate to have received a couple of donations from local supermarkets which has made life just a little easier and allowed SCARS to support members with a Zoom meeting each month.  Now that life is returning slowly to some semblance of normality SCARS are returning to our face to face monthly drop in at The Annex, Stalbridge Village Hall, Lower Road, Stalbridge with the next get together on Monday 28th February between 2-4pm.  If you feel you could benefit from support amongst likeminded friends then do come along and see what we are about, don’t be shy as we are all very friendly and most importantly appreciate life and like to have fun as well!
Picture
Picture
Moving forward SCARS are back with a renewed energy, brand new website, new ideas and plans and you could be someone who could help us bring back some positivity and joy after such difficult and trying times.  If you feel you have something to offer and would like to become part of the SCARS Committee/Volunteers then we would love to welcome you along. We always have a need for volunteers to help run our local fundraising events and if you have an interest in websites and are computer savvy then we are looking for a volunteer who could take on the role (with training) of the day to day updating/maintenance of our website.  Could you be that person we are looking for, if so please do not hesitate to contact us for a chat.

All roles are purely voluntary and SCARS would fully appreciate any amount of time you feel you could offer.

Please contact us at contact.scars@gmail.com or by telephoning SCARS on 07961 027089.

No-one should fight cancer alone and at SCARS we can and will find the strength to face the future together.

Best wishes
Lyn Robinson
