Just in case you haven't seen the news or weather today the Met Office have issued a Red Warning for the South West for tomorrow (Friday 18th Feb 2022). It reads as follows: Red warning of wind. Areas affected: South West England | Wales. Starts: 07:00 GMT on Fri 18 February Ends: 12:00 GMT on Fri 18 February. Storm Eunice causing significant disruption and dangerous conditions due to extremely strong winds on Friday. - Flying debris resulting in danger to life - Damage to buildings and homes, with roofs blown off and power lines brought down - Uprooted trees are likely - Roads, bridges and railway lines closed, with delays and cancellations to bus, train, ferry services and flights - Power cuts affecting other services, such as mobile phone coverage - Large waves and beach material being thrown onto coastal roads, sea fronts and homes, including flooding of some coastal properties After a 15-month closure in 2020/21, Stalbridge Hall was slow to recover. Although we were free to open the doors in June of 2021 some of our regular groups did not want to return until September and then the uncertainty of winter meant we were continuously watching the changing restrictions. Unfortunately, one or two groups did not survive.
However, with life returning to somewhere near normal the hall is as busy as ever. 17 groups use the hall on a regular basis, with ages ranging between a few months old to 93 (a sharp Boules player). The hall is open for 63 hours a week, the kettle is boiled, lights and heating are switched on and off, countless times and on average chairs and tables are put out five times a week. Phew, Busy place. There are 15 committee members that keep the hall running and one dedicated caretaker. In the last six months Stalbridge hall has hosted some great events outside of weekly activities, from outdoor theatre to 16th Century Dorset Carols, plus music from Jazz to Ska. This year brings all kinds of events, we are hopeful the regular Bingo will be reinstated from March onward, plus Car Boot, live Theatre, Music, including Opera later in the year, and this year we will be celebrating the Queens Platinum Jubilee in June. We currently need a Treasurer and Secretary, the existing ones have been hoping to retire for the past couple of years now, but with the uncertainty of Covid have been persuaded to stay on. They now feel it is safe to hand over the reins. We are always grateful for volunteers and help at events or support of any kind. To keep up to date with news, activities, events, plus how to hire the hall and how/who to contact for the various groups, please check out Stalbridge Hall’s shiny new website.
