“Excellent work on both occasions. Firstly, a deep clean to put the property back on the market, was carried out by friendly, courteous and helpful staff for which nothing was too much trouble. On the second occasion, they cleared the property and continued to be as pleasant and helpful as on the first occasion. We would definitely recommend this company and would use them again if the situation arose. A Note of Caution

23/2/2018

Picture
There are still old ten pound notes in circulation, even though the new plastic tenner has been in use for some time now, but you need to spend these before Thursday 1st March when the old tenner ceases to become legal tender. You will be able to bank your "old" tenners at your bank for some time after this. Only problem is finding a branch that is still open near you, that doesn't cost a tenner to get there! The new plastic £10 note featuring Jane Austen came into circulation in September of 2017, replacing the Charles Darwin version.
The 'tenner' was first issued by the Bank of England during the Seven Year’s Global War of 1755 to 1764  in order to help keep more of its gold reserves. The idea was for people to cash in smaller denominations of money in exchange for gold, therefore relieving the strain on the Bank of England. The note was issued in 1759 and was approximateley the width of an A4 sheet of paper. It was printed on one side only using black ink on white paper. These tenners remained in use right up to the end of the Second World War in 1945, when the £10 note was removed from circulation. 19 years later it was re-issued by the Bank of England in 1964.  The £10 note (and £5) was designed by Reynolds Stone and was the first bank note to feature the monarch on the front face.

The current £10 note being withdrawn from use kept a similar style to the original 1993 note but replaced Charles Dickens with Charles Darwin. Alongside Darwin is a depiction of the famous ship HMS Beagle heading out to sea.

Did You Know?
The words on a bank note "I promise to pay the bearer on demand the sum of ten pounds" date from long ago when our notes represented deposits of gold. At that time, a member of the public could exchange one of our banknotes for gold to the same value. For example, a £5 note could be exchanged for five gold coins, called sovereigns. But the value of the pound has not been linked to gold for many years, so the meaning of the promise to pay has changed. Exchange into gold is no longer possible and Bank of England notes can only be exchanged for other Bank of England notes of the same face value. Public trust in the pound is now maintained by the operation of monetary policy, the objective of which is price stability.

Alabama Rot

19/2/2018

Picture
Stalbridge & Marnhull Veterinary Surgery has recently seen several suspected cases of Alabama rot and is advising dog owners to be particularly vigilant in checking their dogs for the clinical signs described below.

What is Alabama rot?
Alabama rot is a disease that causes skin and kidney damage in dogs. Scientists still do not know the cause. There is no vaccination to protect against the disease and no treatment except supportive. Sadly, 80% of cases die from the disease. Dorset is one of the counties with the highest number of confirmed cases.

What are the signs of Alabama rot?
Skin signs – open sores on the feet, legs, lower body; and around and inside the mouth.
Kidney signs – lethargy, not drinking or drinking excessively, vomiting and diarrhoea.

What can I do to prevent Alabama rot?
While there is no way of preventing your dog from catching the disease, investigators suspect there is a link to walking in muddy, woodland areas or areas with running or standing water, particularly between November and March. Washing your dog after a walk, to remove any mud, may be a sensible precaution.

Please remember…
Whilst Alabama rot is a horrible disease, it is very rare, and we encourage you to continue exercising your dog.

Two Bees or not to Bees, that is the question

15/2/2018

Picture
In a new series of blogs for Stalbridge Info Julian de Bosdari of Ashridge Nurseries gives us some very useful advice on the pollination of fruit trees.

All fruit trees need to be pollinated in order to carry fruit. Cross pollination happens when two fruit trees of different but compatible varieties are in flower at the same time and the pollen from one fertilises the flower of the other. There are several "need to knows" here. By and large, fruit trees should not be planted in windy locations or at high altitude (above about 600ft to be safe) because the bees that do the hard work of carrying pollen from tree to tree find it hard to fly in these conditions so pollination will be less reliable.

Second, just because two trees of the same type (e.g. 2 x apples)  are in flower at the same time does not mean they are compatible. So it is important to pay attention to parentage and to pollination group as the fertility "window" of some varieties is very limited. Our tool does that for you.

Third, account needs to be taken of sterile (known as triploid) trees. The best known of these is probably the Bramley. It can be fertilised by a wide range of other varieties but it fertilises nothing in return. So if you are growing a triploid fruit tree, you will need two other varieties to pollinate each other as well as the triploid thereby making sure all your apple trees crop to the maximum.

Finally, some fruit trees are described as being "self-fertile". This is correct but to varying degrees; most plums are perfectly self fertile while almost no apples are and so crop better if they are cross-pollinated by another variety. But if you only have room for one apple tree.....
Julien de Bosdari
Correct Pollination of your Fruit Trees Increases crop Size. To aid gardeners Julien de Bosdari has produced an online pollination checker on the website of Ashridge Trees.  Just select your chosen fruit type and variety in the drop-down lists on the page and click "Find Pollination Partners". You will then get a list of the compatible varieties available. Click on the button below to visit Ashridge Trees website and try out the free online pollination checker.

Garden Jobs for February

13/2/2018

Picture
Julien de Bosdari of Ashridge Trees presents some Monthly Advice for February Jobs in the Garden
FEBRUARY IN YOUR GARDEN

Hedging
This is a tip that will be repeated several times here and next month. The best months for planting most bareroot hedging, if you did not get it in in November are February and March. Spring kicks the plants into growth and they do not spend too long in cold wet soil.

As in January, beware snow. It is heavy, as anyone caught in an avalanche can tell you. It weighs down and can snap young branches, especially if they are coming into bud and leaf towards the end of the month, so sweep any snow off your young hedges as soon as you can.

Older hedges that have overgrown or been neglected can be tackled now. Deciduous hedges and broadleaved evergreens like Laurel can be pruned hard and into shape ready for a growth spurt in spring. Yew can also be pruned back hard, even into old wood, and will recover. For these hedges (Beech, Hawthorn, Hornbeam, Privet, Yew and the like) you can follow our  instructions on pruning an overgrown hedge. However any other conifer (like Leyland cypresses) need to be regularly and lightly trimmed. A severe haircut on these plants will result in bald patches for ever, and ever, and ever…

If any conifer branches have become bent down or misshapen over winter, the best thing is not to cut them off which will leave a gap but to tie them back up again. Use plastic coated wire to attach the drooping branch to the trunk of the tree to restore the balance. Pad where the wire encircles the trunk using an old rag to protect the tree.

Keep any newly planted conifer hedges protected from the drying and defoliating effects of cold winds using polythene or hessian barriers set against the prevailing wind.

Sturminster Newton Amateur Boxing Club presents A Night of Amateur Boxing at Stalbridge Hall on Saturday 24th February. This Annual event brings the best young local boxers together to face opponents from near and far. Doors open at 7.00pm. Tickets on the door only - £12.50 (£6.00 concessions). Bar and Hot Food available on the night. Come and join the great atmosphere and witness this excellent sport.
The Sturminster Newton Boxing and Fitness Club was set up in 2001 by Shaun Weeks. So far the boxing club has produced 26 Western Counties Champions, 10 National semi-finalists, 4 National Finalists & 1 national minors champion.

We endeavour through the Olympic sport of amateur boxing to promote fitness, discipline, friendship, fair play, respect and confidence, increasing quality of life by providing a constructive alternative to anti-social behaviour such as drug and alcohol abuse for the local youth living in Dorset. We also provide positive role models and social inclusion through interaction with our coaching staff and other young boxers.

We have a full committee and currently have four qualified coaches at the club all of whom have to attend certification courses every three years to maintain the highest degree of competency at every level. They all have to be qualified in first aid and CPR and of course, CRB cleared.

We operate child safety policies and have our own child welfare officer.

The club has recently moved to a dedicated business unit split over two floors. We rely purely on grants and donations from the public, keeping the membership fees and weekly cost to a minimum. Please get in touch through the contact us page on our website if you would like to make a donation or have any fundraising suggestions.

There's still time to get you tickets to see Griff Rhys-Jones - "Where was I" at the Octagon Theatre in Yeovil this Saturday.  Join the star of Not the Nine o'clock News, Smith & Jones and Three Men In A Boat as he airs stories, anecdotes, reminiscences and outright lies – from forty years of travelling - down rivers and up mountains, into Africa, out of India, and across the arid wastes of the BBC canteen. It's a career, if you mean bouncing chaotically downhill without a map.
SATURDAY 10TH FEBRUARY 2018 AT 7.30PM - OCTAGON THEATRE YEOVIL. TICKETS £19

Gray's of Stalbridge is an Aladdin's Cave of beautiful gifts

Gray's is always full of wonderful little surprises...I really enjoy going on buying trips to stock the shop with all the gifts and homeware- there are many different styles, materials and colours of the items that are on offer, so there's always something nice to buy, and I try to source items that are reasonably priced - you don't need to spend a fortune getting beautiful gifts for your friends and family! - Jude Newport
Gray's of Stalbridge Website
All about Gray's...
Gray's of Stalbridge opened in November of 2015 after the Family shop became vacant at the same time as I became redundant from my work - So I thought I'd have a go at running my own shop!
The premises in Stalbridge High Street have been in my family for over 70 years. It started out as a butchers shop, run by my parents and I first worked there when I was 14 years old. When my parents retired the shop was rented out and has been used for many things, including a Hairdressers.
Now it is my turn! I really enjoy going on buying trips to stock the shop with all the gifts and homeware- there are many different styles, materials and colours of the items that are on offer, so there's always something nice to buy, and I try to source items that are reasonably priced - you don't need to spend a fortune getting beautiful gifts for your friends and family!
Since the shop has been open I have really enjoyed the social side of running the business- meeting and chatting to regular and new customers and the community spirit that flows from this. I now run regular craft workshops at Gray's, getting people together to learn something new and fun, always accompanied by Tea and my homemade cakes!
And new for this year we will be having a 'Drop-in' coffee, tea and cake day, one Thursday a month from 9.00am to 1.00pm. Do come and join us for this and perhaps pop a few coins in the collection box for the charity we support - Retinitis Pigmentosa. You can find out more about this very worthwhile charity by clicking on the button below. I do hope to see you soon... Jude Newport
