SCREEN Bites, Dorset’s food film festival, makes its first ever visit to Stalbridge on Wednesday 26th October, with some of the area’s best food producers and a great Dorset film. The UK’s only festival that celebrates food on film, Screen Bites is also unique in its format – each evening begins with a mini farmers market, with a chance to taste and buy, followed by a talk or short film, an interval for Purbeck Ice Cream and then the feature film, which at Stalbridge hall will be Far From The Madding Crowd. The landscape and buildings of Dorset are as much the stars of this 2015 film as Carey Mulligan, Matthias Schoenaerts and Michael Sheen. From the corn market filmed at Sherborne School to the farm buildings and land around Mapperton, Thomas Vinterberg’s film is a love letter to Dorset. The stars really shine in this film, with Carey Mulligan as a spirited and passionate Bathsheba, the Belgian actor Schoenaerts convincing as Gabriel Oak, and Michael Sheen as the honourable, lovestruck Farmer Boldwood. It’s more than an hour shorter than the famous 1967 John Schlesinger version with Julie Christie and Alan Bates, but it not only tells Thomas Hardy’s great story well but also gives a real insight into the challenges for an intelligent and independent young woman in mid-19th century Dorset. The food producers at Stalbridge will include Dorset Blue Vinny cheese, Alweston Jam and Chutney Empire, Chocolate Arthouse, Christine’s Puddings, Comins Tea House, Dike & Son, Eggardon Rare Breeds, From Dorset With Love preserves and sauces, Liberty Fields apple juice, apple balsamic and vodka, Mere Fish Farm, Oxfords Bakery, Hall & Woodhouse beers, Purbeck Cider, Thomas J Fudge’s biscuits and Palmers ginger beer. During the day members of the Guild of Food Writers are visiting Dorset and some will be coming to Screen Bites in the evening to talk about their impressions of Dorset and its food. The doors open at 7pm; tickets are £8 – please book, by telephone, 01963 32525, by email screenbites@thanksgiving.demon.co.uk or visit www.screenbites.co.uk
