Although much of the £17,000 needed to purchase the hoard and keep it in Dorset has been raised, 10% of the fundraising contributions are required to come from the local area (roughly £1,700). Following the talk, hosted by Stalbridge History Society, and the generous contributions made by local residents and businesses the remaining amount needed is now less than £1,300. Stalbridge Town Council will be receiving a proposal at their next meeting for the council to contribute to any shortfall remaining at the time. The Town Council is seeking the views of the community in its decision regarding the expenditure of public money raised through council tax to make a contribution to the purchase and has created a survey on the website for residents to complete and let them know your thoughts. Please follow the link below to participate. Please complete the survey by Sunday 17th March 2024. https://www.stalbridgetowncouncil.gov.uk/stalbridge-hoard... The rapier sword found as part of the hoard now appears to be of Scandinavian design. It is unusual as well in that the handle is of cast bronze, where normally a wooden handle would have been fitted to the hilt of the bronze rapier. And speaking of wooden handles, you can see in the picture below that the ‘Palstave’ axe head found at the site would have had an ‘L’ shaped wooden handle fitted to it, formed from a tree branch and fashioned to fit into the upper ‘hollowed’ section of the axe head, which would then have been bound in place by some form of rope. Interestingly, The word ‘palstave’ is a name adopted by archeologists to describe this type of axe, but in a kind of Archeological version of Chinese whispers it is the wrong name to use. The word comes from Paalstab….from….you’ve guessed it…Scandinavia! It actually means Spade Staff, a tool used for digging, not chopping. The word ‘Paal’ still survives in English as ‘Peel’, which is the spade a baker uses to load and unload bread into an oven. You might have noticed that the flags flown on The Ring at Stalbridge change quite frequently during the course of a year, but why do they change and what do they mean?
Well, the flags wouldn’t be flown at all if it were not for the dedication of two Stalbridge residents- Ian Semple and Eric Smith, who hoist the flags to mark the different occasions. The Stalbridge Flag, designed by local artist Tony Wood, is proudly flown the most, on every day that is not featured in the list below, but also on Dorset Day (1st June), which normally would warrant the Dorset flag but our flag happens to incorporate the Dorset flag in its design. Our next most flown flag is The union flag which is flown to mark royal occasions, Remembrance Sunday and Remembrance Day, which have been on two different days since 2018, when Remembrance Day fell on a Sunday, just like the original Armistice Day in 1918. 2024 Designated days for flying Flags on the Ring are: 9 January: Birthday Princess of Wales- The Union Flag 20 January: Birthday Duchess of Edinburgh- The Union Flag 10 March: Birthday Duke of Edinburgh- The Union Flag 11 March: Commonwealth Day (2nd Monday in March)- The Union Flag 9 April: His Majesty’s Wedding Day- The Union Flag 23 April: St George’s Day (in England)- St George’s Flag 6 May: Coronation Day- The Union Flag 1 June: Dorset Day- Stalbridge Flag 15 June: Birthday Parade of His Majesty The King- The Union Flag 21 June: Birthday of The Prince of Wales- The Union Flag 29 June: Armed Forces Day- Armed Forces Flag 17 July: Birthday of The Queen Consort- The Union Flag 15 August: Birthday Princess Royal- The Union Flag 3 September: Merchant Navy Day-The Red Ensign 8 September: His Majesty’s Accession- The Union Flag 21 October: Trafalgar Day- The White Ensign 1 – 9 November:- The Royal British Legion Flag 10 – 11 November: Remembrance Sunday & Remembrance Day- The Union Flag 14 November: Birthday of His Majesty The King- The Union Flag (The Stalbridge Flag is flown on all other days) STALBRIDGE COMMUNITY SHOP Presents their EASTER RAFFLE!

A few years ago a Metal Detectorist found a Bronze Age rapier, an axe head and a decorated bracelet somewhere in the Stalbridge area. The ‘Stalbridge Hoard’ as it is called is considered a find of national importance. Dorset County Museum in Dorchester want to keep this treasure in Dorset by purchasing it. They can then do important research on the finds and display them to the public. They have raised a lot of the £17,000 (approx) needed to secure the treasure and avoid it being purchased by others and possibly taken out of the county or country, but they need to get 10% of the funding locally. If you would like to help them by making a donation please follow the link at the bottom of this post.
If your primary school history knowledge has moved to the back of your memory The Bronze Age was from 2,700 years ago to about 4,500 years ago. This was the period when tools and weapons and useful items were made of bronze, a mixture of copper and tin. Being able to mine tin from shallow deposits in the South West of England made this area able to trade extensively with Europe. Yes, we had a Bronze Age Boom in The South West! Before the Bronze Age the Neolithic Britons, (who had built Stonehenge) were a completely different people. These were gradually ‘replaced’ with people migrating from the central Steppe area of Eurasia over about 700 years during the early bronze age. They brought their culture with them. Bronze Age people lived in roundhouses, built off the ground on thick posts and resembling a very strong glamping yurt. Early Bronze Age Britons buried their dead in earth mounds (barrows), but Middle bronze Age people started cremation and burying metal objects at the site such as daggers. So is The Stalbridge Hoard a burial site? Why was the rapier deliberately broken into three pieces? Who would have worn the bracelet found? There are many questions for Dorchester Museum to investigate, and many questions the residents of Stalbridge may have, so why not pop down to Stalbridge Hall for 10am on Saturday 10th February, when a talk will be given by Clare Randall, Dorset Archaeology Advisor and Elizabeth Selby, Director of Collections and Public Engagement at Dorset Museum. Entry is free and Coffee/Tea & Biscuits will be available for £1.00) You can find out more on The Stalbridge Hoard treasure and appeal by clicking on the links below. finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/993242 www.dorsetmuseum.org/stalbridge-middle-bronze-age-hoard-appeal/ Quirk Calligraphy presents "Pens & Prosecco- Mothers Day Edition". "First up in the Guggleton Farms Arts Milking Parlour Gallery this year is Ali Mauger, ART IS A VERB. Ali is a firm believer in the power that having a creative practice of some kind in your life can do to help you weather storms, overcome obstacles and face challenges. It's the perfect exhibition for a problematic new year! She is experienced at dealing with people of all ages facing serious health concerns and has witnessed first hand the restorative power of art. Ali will be in the Milking Parlour from 11-3 every Wednesday during the exhibition, to facilitate free drop-in 'zine' making sessions. A zine, in this case, is basically a small book, made from a single sheet of paper. The name comes from 'magazine' because it is usually a method of self-publication, as it can be photocopied easily for distribution. We will be using the same technique, but just for our own purposes of creating a small, easily created book for mark making and sketching, with the emphasis on creativity for well-being. In other words, this is just for fun and no artistic ability is needed, so it is suitable for all ages and abilities. She will be encouraging people to explore the technique of art journaling as a creative method of self care and zine making is a gentle introduction to this. So why not pop in for a cuppa and a chat and a bit of all that? You can read below Ali's art MANIFESTO devised specifically for this show." Ali will also be hosting an Artist's reception this Friday [19th Jan] between 6-8pm, be sure to pop along and have a chat with this fascinating woman. we are delighted to have our first album launch this Saturday!
