Throughout the year we provide opportunities, such as after school and toddler groups, for us to stay in touch with our creativity as young people and families. During school holidays we also run craft camps for young people to immerse themselves in their creativity. We aim to introduce the students to as many different forms of Arts & Crafts as possible, whilst fostering in them an appreciation for each individuals' ability to create, respect for one another and the creative environment and to inspire them to keep creating beyond their time at The Gugg. At Guggleton we are ever conscious of the links between creative pursuit and wellbeing, and we focus as much upon the right environment and circumstances to help us create, as the outcome. We are also keen to work with groups on team building and collaboration, helping one another to reach a common goal and celebrating the achievements together. The Gugg presents ART FIGHT ! on 25th May from 6-10.30. Although much of the £17,000 needed to purchase the hoard and keep it in Dorset has been raised, 10% of the fundraising contributions are required to come from the local area (roughly £1,700). Following the talk, hosted by Stalbridge History Society, and the generous contributions made by local residents and businesses the remaining amount needed is now less than £1,300. Stalbridge Town Council will be receiving a proposal at their next meeting for the council to contribute to any shortfall remaining at the time. The Town Council is seeking the views of the community in its decision regarding the expenditure of public money raised through council tax to make a contribution to the purchase and has created a survey on the website for residents to complete and let them know your thoughts. Please follow the link below to participate. Please complete the survey by Sunday 17th March 2024. https://www.stalbridgetowncouncil.gov.uk/stalbridge-hoard... The rapier sword found as part of the hoard now appears to be of Scandinavian design. It is unusual as well in that the handle is of cast bronze, where normally a wooden handle would have been fitted to the hilt of the bronze rapier. And speaking of wooden handles, you can see in the picture below that the ‘Palstave’ axe head found at the site would have had an ‘L’ shaped wooden handle fitted to it, formed from a tree branch and fashioned to fit into the upper ‘hollowed’ section of the axe head, which would then have been bound in place by some form of rope. Interestingly, The word ‘palstave’ is a name adopted by archeologists to describe this type of axe, but in a kind of Archeological version of Chinese whispers it is the wrong name to use. The word comes from Paalstab….from….you’ve guessed it…Scandinavia! It actually means Spade Staff, a tool used for digging, not chopping. The word ‘Paal’ still survives in English as ‘Peel’, which is the spade a baker uses to load and unload bread into an oven. You might have noticed that the flags flown on The Ring at Stalbridge change quite frequently during the course of a year, but why do they change and what do they mean?
Well, the flags wouldn’t be flown at all if it were not for the dedication of two Stalbridge residents- Ian Semple and Eric Smith, who hoist the flags to mark the different occasions. The Stalbridge Flag, designed by local artist Tony Wood, is proudly flown the most, on every day that is not featured in the list below, but also on Dorset Day (1st June), which normally would warrant the Dorset flag but our flag happens to incorporate the Dorset flag in its design. Our next most flown flag is The union flag which is flown to mark royal occasions, Remembrance Sunday and Remembrance Day, which have been on two different days since 2018, when Remembrance Day fell on a Sunday, just like the original Armistice Day in 1918. 2024 Designated days for flying Flags on the Ring are: 9 January: Birthday Princess of Wales- The Union Flag 20 January: Birthday Duchess of Edinburgh- The Union Flag 10 March: Birthday Duke of Edinburgh- The Union Flag 11 March: Commonwealth Day (2nd Monday in March)- The Union Flag 9 April: His Majesty’s Wedding Day- The Union Flag 23 April: St George’s Day (in England)- St George’s Flag 6 May: Coronation Day- The Union Flag 1 June: Dorset Day- Stalbridge Flag 15 June: Birthday Parade of His Majesty The King- The Union Flag 21 June: Birthday of The Prince of Wales- The Union Flag 29 June: Armed Forces Day- Armed Forces Flag 17 July: Birthday of The Queen Consort- The Union Flag 15 August: Birthday Princess Royal- The Union Flag 3 September: Merchant Navy Day-The Red Ensign 8 September: His Majesty’s Accession- The Union Flag 21 October: Trafalgar Day- The White Ensign 1 – 9 November:- The Royal British Legion Flag 10 – 11 November: Remembrance Sunday & Remembrance Day- The Union Flag 14 November: Birthday of His Majesty The King- The Union Flag (The Stalbridge Flag is flown on all other days) STALBRIDGE COMMUNITY SHOP Presents their EASTER RAFFLE!
